Pulling the roof down on Monday was good fun. There were loads of us there, there wasn’t much fussing about and it came down as planned.

The fun came after that, as it was the most bug ridden house we’ve worked at yet. Massive spiders, centipedes, cockroaches etc. But best of all were the scorpions. We’ve come across some baby ones already, but a couple of times at this site we lifted up bricks to see full grown scorpions running about. Thankfully no one was stung, and we just cut their stingers off then chucked them back into the jungle.

We also had a laugh with the Indonesian lads that lived in or around the house. They brought their trained monkey out to fetch us some coconuts but he wasn’t playing ball. I tried to climb the tree. I failed. Amazingly one little kid got right to the top of a massive one and managed to knock some down for us. Another lad was kind enough to bring his machete along and provide us with fresh coconut juice. Sweet!

We also had a little kick about after work with the Indonesians. It would’ve been fun but it started to rain, and the small pitch had a cow in the middle of it.

The rest of the week has involved standard salvage jobs, some new volunteers arriving, and Ash and I taking down a roof. Tomorrow I’ve put myself down for house keeping duty so I can rest up before our big Saturday night hike up a volcano. Edwin has done a sweet job of organizing it, and I think it’s a ten hour hike followed by Ash’s birthday night in Bukit Tinggi…
